PNG economy set to grow in 2010
18 JANUARY 2010 PORT MORESBY (POST COURIER) ---- Papua New Guinea (PNG) among other Pacific Island countries will see economic growth this year despite the global financial meltdown, according to the United Nations and the Government of Vanuatu.
East Timor and possibly Vanuatu will also experience economic growth while other Pacific economies slow down.
The impact of the global economic crisis will be discussed during a two-day conference in Vanuatu next month.
The United Nations in the Pacific and Government of Vanuatu in partnership with Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Asian Development Bank, Secretariat of the Pacific Community and the University of the South Pacific will be hosting the Pacific Conference on the Human Face of the Global Economic Crisis in Port Vila from February 10 to 12.
“It is possible that the full impact of the global economic crisis has not yet been felt in the Pacific,” the organisers said in a statement yesterday.
“On the positive side, this gives countries a small window of opportunity to put together more thoughtful and effective remedial policies and actions.
“On the negative side, this may mean that the impact may be even greater in 2010.
“The Pacific Conference on the Human Face of the Global Economic Crisis will bring together more than 200 high level delegates from 16 Pacific Island countries to discuss the issues that the poor and vulnerable are facing in the Pacific.”
The meeting will discuss ways to mitigate the impact of the crisis on various categories of vulnerable groups – including women and children.
Eight member delegations from 16 Pacific Island countries will be participating.
Also included are 60 development partners, NGOs, private sector and media representatives from the Pacific.
According to the program, the Papua New Guinean delegation will comprise of Ministers for Planning, Finance and Treasury, Health and Education. …PNS (ENDS) |
